If you’re looking for a new stainless steel pendant to wear as a necklace, you may have noticed that crosses are a popular option, especially among the biker crowd. You may also have realised that there are many types of crosses used as pendants on jewellery – but do you know what they all mean?

Crosses, of course, have religious significance for some. But depending on what the cross is made from and how it is held together, these symbols can have different meanings.

Once you know what different types of crosses mean, you can find one that best makes the statement you want to make.

  • Skull and crossed bones: This kind of cross is a symbol of defiance, mortality and fearless individuality. If you know someone who likes to forge their own path, this could well be the piece of jewellery for them.

  • Entwined barbed wire: Although you might not think it, a cross that is made to resemble entwined barbed wire showcases strength, resilience and sacrifice. This kind of cross is a sign that you can keep the faith without losing your rebellious edge.

  • A cross with a serpent: Everyone is familiar with the biblical story of how Eve was tempted to try the apple by a serpent in the tree – so a cross that features a snake wrapping around it symbolises both sides of this story: purity and temptation.

A pendant like this speaks to the tension that exists in all of us between faith and instinct, which is why it’s such an appealing design.

  • A cross with eyes: Eyes have long been part of religious symbolism, often used to indicate the “all-seeing” nature of God. But they also appear on certain religious statues that depict Christ’s crucifixion – such as the legendary Volto Santo of Lucca.

This particular statue underwent a restoration in 2020, during which it was radiocarbon dated to the ninth century, making it one of the oldest preserved wooden sculptures in Europe.

So, it’s worth thinking about the symbolism behind your stainless steel jewellery, because it might just say more about you than you imagine.
